It always surprised me how many people have missed this little holiday gem. A Christmas Story is a wonderful awkward little film from 1983 that sums up everything that sucks about this favorite holiday. This is the kind of film you look forward to seeing each and every yule tide season.
A Christmas Story is presented as a very charming, nostalgic, almost Rockwellean tribute to holiday remembrances. A Wonder Years like narrator takes us through the story of his looking back on a specific Christmas, the Christmas he wanted a Red Ryder BB gun. However, this pristine surface belies a more bitter underbelly that sums up so much of what gets us down at this time of year. It speaks to our raised and dashed expectations in our consumer society. Things donít go so well for little Ralphie or his family. The hilarity inevitably ensues.
Itís hard to imagine not enjoying the leg lamp that Ralphieís father wins and loves despite how horrid it is. Itís hard not to enjoy how the Parkers end up for their Christmas dinner. A Christmas Story is the kind of film that anyone can enjoy and usually do.
If you havenít seen this best kept secret of the holiday film world, then give yourself a gift and make sure you rent it this holiday.
