I have loved The Wizard of Oz since before I can remember. While it was always a favourite of mine, I have come to understand that each time I watch it I become more enraptured under its spell. Each time I see it, I see more of the magic of this, the most magical of films ever made.

As I watch the film now as an adult, I realize that one of the things that I appreciate most about the film is the way it treats its women characters. It is one of the few popular films which would pass the Bechdel Test and may even go beyond. The women in The Wizard of Oz are self-actualized and in charge of themselves. Remarkable for 1938.

But it is also just a great adventure. It is a complete film which works regardless of how you look at it, fantasy, analogy, is it all a dream. One of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, it is a joy to loose yourself in.

The 3 disc Collector’s Edition DVD and Blu-Ray editions give this film its proper due. The film itself is remarkable. All its Technicolor beauty can be appreciated for the first time since it was first released over 60 years ago. The film is accompanied by commentary by a film historian that includes archival interviews with the cast. This is a dream come true for fans of the film.

The second disc is filled with the documentaries, outtakes and making-of programs which die-hards love. They are very well done and entertaining even for casual fans. There is such a rich mythology surrounding this film and these features highlight all this. There are hours of entertainment here definitely worth checking out.

The third disc focuses on the story itself and its author. This is the chance to examine the history of the legend and learn more about L. Frank Baum himself. Included are early silent film adaptation of a number of his novels reminding us that before this film, Oz was already a phenomenon.

The Wizard of Oz is a film that every film library should include and this set is the worth the price. Pick it up to enjoy over and over.
