Breakfast on Pluto - Scrumptious!
| I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Breakfast on Pluto, Neil Jordan's (The Crying Game) latest film, is a hilarious comedy. Sure it is set against a lot of "serious" stuff, but the main character resoundly protests the "serious."
Kitten, as she likes to be called, is played by Cillian Murphy, showing his range after playing a horror survivor (28 Days Later), a hitman (Red Eye), and a psychokiller (Batman Begins). Here he plays the transsexual with wit and subtly, never turning her into a caricature but allowing her playing spirit to shine through. It is easy to play a flamboyant character over the top but Murphy reins it in with great success.
Breakfast on Pluto follows her life through Ireland's struggles (the "serious" stuff in the background she complains about) but focuses on her personal relationships more than the political. Throughout, Kitten finds the humour in everything and itís a testimony to her strength.
Breakfast on Pluto gets slow in the middle but picks up into a great ending. Generally, the film is very entertaining from the lead performance to Jordan's playful direction.
