Primer is one kick ass, adrenalin pumping cerebral flick. I can't remember the last time a film had my brain reeling, and even somewhat hurting, before Primer.

To explain the basic premise, Primer is the story of two young engineers who discover time travel but not in the clichéd movie way; they invent a box which degrades gravity and it goes from there. After they begin to test the box in ways they could exploit it commercially, the two end up competing with each other and with different versions of themselves as chaos ensues.

The movie works because of the skill of first time filmmaker, Shane Carruth. His West Wing approach to dialogue and his fast paced approach to storytelling create a madly fascinating puzzle. Who is who and when is when? Primer is grounded in a serious realism that never lets the science fiction element overtake. This allows the film to be both enigma and morality tale in a similar, if somewhat more challenging way as Momento.

Primer is the perfect DVD movie because, like the characters, one needs to experience the timeline over and over to get a grip on what is going on. Primer's short running time allows for this and the film is more pleasurable as you re-watch it, putting together the pieces of motivation and identity.

Primer is super fun for those who enjoy biting off more than they can chew. Be prepared to do some figuring as the film demands your participation. It will give back what you put into it and will only disappoint the lazy or uninspired.

Primer is the kind of film that you will remember and return to again and again and therefore is well worth whatever money you spent on it.
