Exorcism of Emily Rose, the - The Devil and Tom Wilkinson
| As I was watching The Exorcism of Emily Rose the question that kept popping into my head was, ďWhy are actors like Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson picking bad scripts like this just as their careers are finally taking off?Ē
The Exorcism of Emily Rose has a bit of a split personality. It attempts to be both an exorcism horror film and a courtroom drama. Unfortunately, the courtroom scenes lack any sense of drama and the horror parts arenít scary in the slightest.
I guess no movie can ever be The Exorcist. How do you make such a brilliant film again. It would be like trying to remake Casablanca. There just isnít any point. However after 4 lame ass sequels and numerous rip offs, Hollywood just doesnít learn.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose is trying so hard to be scary that they forgot that this story isnít a scary one. Still they persist, trying so hard that they throw in cats jumping out of nowhere, strange noises that turn out to be nothing, shots of bleeding religious paraphernalia. They try anything they can to make the audience jump. Itís all smoke and mirrors as there is very little terrifying in Emily Rose.
The exorcism scene itself is a big disappointment. The film is rated PG-13 so if a 14 year old can handle it, itís not that bad. The film fails miserably as a horror film so one would hope that it could work as courtroom drama. One would hope.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose imagines itself as an inversion of Inherit the Wind with itís battle of faith vs. science. In its dreams! This film canít hold a candle to that picture. The Exorcism of Emily Rose reduces the issue to a nonsensical battle between religion and medicine that clouds the issue. In a case like this, the issue isnít whoís right but did he do the essential elements of the crime.
Regardless of the mistakes in logic, the courtroom scenes suffer from a lot of over the top grandiosity. Campbell Scott huffs around in a rage looking like a clown. The two fine actors I mentioned at the beginning of the review are reduced to uttering the most ridiculous platitudes.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose, while not as bad as the Exorcist prequels released last year, is a big disappointment. Skip it and rent the classic again.
